[VIDEO] Mind-Wandering: How Straying from the Present Moment Creates Unhappiness

Scientists have proven that linear time is a man-made measuring tool for the mind and is really just an illusion. The only thing that is real is the timeless present — right now. That’s all there is and all there has ever been.

It’s a hard concept for many to get their minds around, but it’s true: there is no “past,” there is no “future”…there is, and has always been, just now. So if that’s true, why do most humans spend most of their lives focusing somewhere else besides the present moment?

Mind-wandering is an epidemic that seems to span all walks of life. Worry, fear, doubt, anxiety, and unhappiness in general all come from mind-wandering — from focusing our attention away from the present moment, on some perceived past or future event or circumstance. In turn, this leads us away from our true, natural self, which is what we connect to when we’re in the present moment.

As teacher Matt Killingsworth explains in his wonderful video, being present is the only healthy, peaceful way to live. As he shows us, staying present in the now is what it means to be truly alive.
